Examining Perceptions of Online Text Size and Typeface Legibility for Older Males and Females
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study examined the perceived font legibility, ease of reading, and font sharpness, as well as perceptions of font attractiveness, fun/personality, and general preference of two serif (Times New Roman and Georgia) and sans serif (Arial and Verdana) fonts at 12and 14-point sizes on a computer by older adults (mean age of 70). The results revealed that participants perceived the 14-point size as more legible than the 12-point size. A significant interaction was found for font ease of reading and sharpness. Males perceived the 14-point size as being easier to read and sharper than the 12-point size. Females, however, showed little change in these perceptions as the font size changed from 12 to 14 points. Moreover, assessing font attraction revealed a significant interaction. Males perceived the 14-point size as being more attractive and had greater personality/fun than the 12-point size, whereas female’s perceptions, regardless of the font size, were generally equivalent to the male’s perceptions at the 14-point size. All participants significantly preferred the larger, 14-point sans serif fonts. No significant effects were found for font typeface. Implications of these results and design recommendations for online text for older adults are discussed.

Assessing the impact of typeface design in a text-rich automotive user interface
Text-rich driver-vehicle interfaces are increasingly common in new vehicles, yet the effects of different typeface characteristics on task performance in this brief off-road based glance context remains sparsely examined. Subjects completed menu selection tasks while in a driving simulator. Menu text was set either in a 'humanist' or 'square grotesque' typeface. Among men, use of the humanist t...
متن کاملUtilising psychophysical techniques to investigate the effects of age, typeface design, size and display polarity on glance legibility
Psychophysical research on text legibility has historically investigated factors such as size, colour and contrast, but there has been relatively little direct empirical evaluation of typographic design itself, particularly in the emerging context of glance reading. In the present study, participants performed a lexical decision task controlled by an adaptive staircase method. Two typefaces, a ...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Typeface Design in a Text-Rich Automotive User Interface
This paper reports on the results of a project examining the impact of typeface design on glance behavior away from the roadway when a driver interacts with a multi-line menu display designed to model a text-rich automotive human machine interface (HMI). Data from two studies are considered. Across the two studies, usable data was collected from 82 participants ranging from 36 to 75 years of ag...
متن کاملThe effects of Chinese typeface design, stroke weight, and contrast polarity on glance based legibility
Modern interfaces increasingly rely on screens filled with digital text to display information to users. Previous research has shown that even relatively subtle differences in the design of the on-screen typeface can influence to-device glance time in a measurable and meaningful way (Reimer et al., 2014). Here we outline a methodology for rapidly and flexibly investigating the legibility of typ...

This study investigated how common online text aVects reading performance of elementary school-age children by examining the actual and perceived readability of four computer-displayed typefaces at 12and 14-point sizes. Twenty-seven children, ages 9 to 11, were asked to read eight children’s passages and identify erroneous/substituted words while reading. Comic Sans MS, Arial and Times New Roma...
